Why are hand measures better than size terms?
The guideline found that terms like medium and small are understood differently even by trained people. A hand measure stays fixed for the person using it.
The most common way to describe a portion is with size terms: one medium apple, one small potato. Türkiye Beslenme Rehberi, the national dietary guideline, found that these terms are not descriptive enough and can be understood as different sizes even by people trained in nutrition. That is why it recommends using easily understood hand measures such as the fist, the finger and the handful.
