How do fluid needs change on hot and active days?
The more you sweat, the more fluid you need. A guide to building the routine for exercise, hot weather and long journeys.
Fluid need is not a fixed number; it rises along with sweating. The adequate intake value given for adults in TÜBER, Türkiye’s national dietary guideline — 2.0 liters for women and 2.5 liters for men — is for normal conditions. A hot day or a long walk moves that starting point upward.
Below we look at what sweating costs, how the routine is built before and after exercise, what to watch for in hot weather, and what to do while traveling.
What sweating changes
Sweating is not only a loss of water; some minerals are lost along with it. In short and moderate activity that loss is easily met through meals.
The size of the loss varies with air temperature, humidity and how long the activity lasts. The same walk calls for a different amount of fluid on two different days.
So rather than giving a fixed extra amount, it is sounder to go by observation: thirst, tiredness and the color of urine are rough but usable indicators.
Before and after exercise
Not starting an activity thirsty works better than trying to make up for it afterward. A glass of water half an hour before you start does that job.
During the activity, drinking small amounts at intervals is more comfortable than drinking a lot at once. In long activities that arrangement makes a noticeable difference.
Afterward the loss is replaced gradually. There is no need to drink a large amount at once; a routine spread over the day is easier to keep up.
Are sports drinks necessary
For moderate activity that does not go past an hour, water is usually enough. These drinks are designed for long activities that involve heavy sweating.
Drunk in daily life, they come close to the sweetened drinks group. They have to be judged by reading their labels.
The routine in hot weather
On hot days the loss rises even without activity. So in the summer months the same person needs more fluid than in winter.
The practical approach is to spread it over the day without waiting for thirst. Putting fixed points in the morning, at midday and in the late afternoon is the arrangement that works most easily on hot days.
The watery foods at the table are part of that total too. Items such as soup, ayran, watermelon and cucumber contribute directly to fluid on hot days.
What to do while traveling
On long journeys drinking water is often reduced on purpose. That leaves a noticeable tiredness at the end of the road.
The route that works better is small amounts tied to the stops. Instead of drinking a lot at once, placing a glass at each break leaves a balanced intake across the day.
Mixing it up with hunger
On hot and active days thirst is often felt as hunger. When a vague urge to eat appears between meals, drinking a glass of water first and waiting a few minutes is a harmless way of telling them apart.
We covered the subject in detail in this tip.
Sauna, hamam and hot showers
Any setting where sweating rises raises fluid loss too. In places like the hamam, the Turkish bath, and the sauna that loss becomes noticeable in a short time.
Not going into these places thirsty, and not waiting a long time on the way out without replacing the loss, are the two most basic steps. Taking water in with you is more reliable than trying to remember afterward.
Why it is skipped in winter
In cold weather thirst falls off and fluid intake over the day drops without your noticing. In closed and heated places, meanwhile, the loss is higher than expected.
So in winter the routine is tied to habit rather than to feeling. Hot drinks are part of that total too and make drinking easier on cold days.
Having soup as a fixed part of the table does the same job. In most households that is the fluid habit most easily kept up in winter.
Who needs to be more careful
In older people thirst can be reduced; in that case fluid intake is tied to a routine rather than to feeling. In children the loss during activity is faster.

How much to increase it by
Rather than giving a precise extra amount, it is more realistic to add to the reference value according to the conditions of the day. For a rough start, the daily water need tool gives a range from weight and activity level.
In short: do not start an activity thirsty, drink small amounts at intervals, do not wait for thirst on hot days and count the watery items at the table too. We covered the whole picture in the water and drinks guide.
