Why do fluid needs get overlooked in older age?

The need does not fall; the sense that signals it weakens. This explains why the reference value stays the same and how to set up the day's fluid pattern.

Fluid needs get overlooked in older age because the need does not fall, the sense that signals it weakens. In the reference table of TÜBER, Türkiye's national dietary guideline, the recommended water intake stands at 2.5 liters for men and 2.0 liters for women over 70 as well; this value is the same as on the 18-50 age row.

Below we look at why the reference does not fall, how the sense of thirst changes, the part played by medicines and kidney function, how to set up the day and where the limit lies.

The reference does not fall with age

The adequate intake values the guideline gives for water are written by age row. The same value stands on all of the 18-50, 51-64, 65-70 and over-70 rows: 2.5 liters in men, 2.0 liters in women.

This does not mean that fluid gets easier in older age; the opposite. Because the target stays the same while the mechanism that reminds you of it weakens, the gap between them widens. So knowing the number is not enough, it has to be placed into the day.

Why the sense of thirst weakens

The guideline writes this in two separate places. In the beverages section it states that individuals aged 65 and over should take care to drink water without being thirsty, because their sense of thirst is reduced.

In the older age section the same fact is mentioned together with its consequence: in old age, not consuming enough fluids because of the reduced sense of thirst leads to dehydration.

This is not a failing but a measured physiological change. Its practical consequence is clear as well: fluid is tied to a routine, not to a sensation.

The part played by medicines and the kidneys

The same sentence counts a second reason: the use of some medicines, particularly diuretics and laxatives, causes dehydration. It is also written that older individuals use more than one medicine because of the chronic diseases they have.

The third reason is the body itself: as a result of frequent urination and less fluid being held in the body, total body water decreases. When the three reasons stack up, the shortfall grows through the day without being noticed. This is why it is hard to solve the problem by looking at a single reason.

How much a day

The guideline gives a separate number for this age group too: older people should consume at least 2000-2500 mL of fluid a day, and to meet the requirement it is necessary to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day.

The number of glasses is not a reliable measure on its own, because the volume of a su bardağı, the standard drinking glass, varies between 200 and 560 milliliters. If tracking is going to be done, a single container whose volume you know gives less error than counting; you count how many times that container goes round during the day.

How the day is set up

The guideline's recommendation is direct: older individuals should be helped to drink water at set intervals even when they are not thirsty. So the moment of drinking is tied not to thirst but to the points that already exist in the day.

A glass per meal, and one glass on getting up and one in the middle of the day, is the easiest form of this pattern to set up. We covered reminder methods separately in this guide.

Setting the pattern up together with someone else makes it easier too; if there is someone else living at home, the drinking moments can be tied to a shared routine.

Fluid does not come from water alone

The guideline lists suitable fluid sources for this age group: freshly squeezed fruit juices, milk, ayran and soups. These also provide other nutrients at the same time.

Milk is singled out as well; it is mentioned as a good drink both for fluid intake and for meeting the calcium requirement. For a person with difficulty chewing and swallowing, soup carries both the fluid side and the meal side together.

Where tea and coffee stand

It is recommended that caffeinated drinks such as coffee and tea be consumed in moderation and that herbal teas be preferred.

There is a separate note for black tea: because it reduces the absorption of iron when drunk together with meals, it is recommended to be drunk an hour before or after meals, lightly brewed and with lemon. This means shifting the hour of the tea, not removing it.

Where the limit lies

These numbers are references given for a healthy adult. In conditions such as kidney or heart disease, the amount of fluid is set by the doctor and this stops being a nutrition decision. In such a case the general reference values here do not count as valid.

This content has been prepared to support general nutrition literacy; it does not take the place of medical diagnosis or treatment. If there is a chronic disease or regular medication use, the fluid pattern is set under the supervision of a doctor and a dietitian.

In short: know that the reference does not fall, tie drinking to the day rather than to thirst, count soup and milk into the total, shift the hour of your tea, and ask your doctor if there is illness. We gave the short answer in this tip and the general reference in the water guide.
