How is a fluid routine built for children?

The reference value rises step by step with age and sex; what carries the routine is not the number but access. It also writes the infancy limit separately.

A child's fluid routine is not built on a single number of glasses; the reference value rises step by step with age and sex and covers all the fluid taken through the day. What carries the routine is not the number but water being reachable all day long.

Below we cover which age range this guide describes, how the reference values progress with age, what the value covers, how a school and play day is set up, which drinks are kept outside this routine, and when a doctor is consulted.

Which age this guide describes

The frame here is built for two years and above. Infancy is a separate subject and falls outside the scope of this guide.

The reason is clear: the guideline defines infants as the group most at risk of dehydration, and in that period the fluid decision is made not by the family but under a doctor's follow-up. We wrote the limit separately in this tip.

How the reference values progress with age

In the adequate intake table of TÜBER, Türkiye's national dietary guideline, water is given for children as follows: 1.3 liters a day for ages 2-3, and 1.6 liters for ages 4-6.

After the age of seven the table splits by sex. For boys ages 7-8 it is 1.6 liters and ages 9-10 it is 2.1 liters; for girls ages 7-8 it is 1.6 liters and ages 9-10 it is 1.9 liters.

In adolescence the values come close to the adult range: at 14 it is 2.5 liters for boys and 2.0 liters for girls. We covered the adult equivalent in this guide.

What this value covers

The number in the table describes not only the water drunk from a glass but the total fluid taken through the day. Soup, milk and ayran are inside this total; so is the water inside foods.

This distinction matters especially in children, because what is drunk at the table makes up a clear part of the total. Even so the guideline's order is plain: the fluid requirement is met first of all with water.

That is why a calculation made without counting what is drunk at the table stays incomplete. A glass of milk or a bowl of soup taken next to a meal holds a visible place in the day's total.

What makes the need shift

Water requirement changes with air temperature, body build, physical activity and the diet being eaten. Even for the same child it is not the same in summer and in winter.

The difference between a day spent moving and a day spent at home comes from here as well. The reference value is a starting point; the conditions of the day carry that point upward.

How a school and play day is set up

What carries the routine in a child is not reminding but access. A bottle standing in the bag, whose volume is known, also makes visible how much has been drunk during the day.

The moments of drinking are tied to habits that already exist: before leaving for school, at break, on getting home and next to every meal. That way no separate effort is needed during the day.

After play and sport is a separate stop. On a day when sweating rises, water is offered at intervals without waiting for thirst.

Setting up this access is even easier at a crowded table. A jug standing on the table creates the moment of drinking on its own, without loading the reminder onto anyone.

Which drinks stay outside the routine

The guideline limits some drinks separately for children. In children under two, foods and drinks containing added sugar are to be avoided; drinks sweetened with artificial sweeteners are not recommended for children.

There are two limits on the milk side too: children under two should not consume reduced-fat milk and milk products, and plant milks should not be offered as an alternative to cow's milk, especially under the age of two.

These limits are not a list of bans but an age-based frame. After the age of two as well, sugary drinks stay items met now and then rather than a regular part of the day.

The caffeine side

Caffeine is a separate heading in children. The guideline writes that caffeine intake in children and adolescents should not exceed 2.5 milligrams per kilogram and states that caffeinated drinks other than tea and coffee are not suitable for children.

Caffeinated fizzy drinks are also high in acidity, they carry no bioactive substance, and if sugar has been added their energy content rises. So while these drinks contribute to the fluid total, they bring other things along with them.

When a doctor is consulted

Constant and excessive thirst, unusual urination frequency, diarrhea, vomiting and periods of febrile illness are the subject of clinical assessment, not of nutrition literacy.

This content was prepared to support general nutrition literacy; it does not take the place of medical diagnosis or treatment and does not constitute personal nutrition advice. A personal plan is prepared only by a qualified dietitian; if there is pregnancy, chronic illness, regular medication use, child nutrition or a clinical condition, a doctor's and a dietitian's check is mandatory before starting a plan.

In short: take the age-appropriate reference value as a starting point, count the total fluid, keep water visible, and judge sugary or caffeinated drinks without counting them as part of this routine. We gave the numbers for children briefly in this tip.
