Why does pasta look like so much once cooked?
Dry pasta grows in volume as it takes up water. It goes in as 30 grams raw and comes to the plate as half a cup, 75 grams, once boiled.
Pasta takes up water as it cooks and its volume grows noticeably; the amount that goes into the pot looking small comes to the plate looking large. Türkiye Beslenme Rehberi, the national dietary guideline, gives one standard portion as 30 grams for raw pasta and, for boiled pasta, half a cup or one level medium ladle, that is 75 grams. Taking the measure before the pot is easier than estimating on the plate.
