Is the feeling of thirst always reliable?
It is not. The guideline states that when sodium and potassium are lost along with the water, the thirst center may not be stimulated.
Thirst is the best-known sign that the body needs fluid, but on its own it is not a reliable criterion. TÜBER, Türkiye's national dietary guideline, explains the mechanism: when plasma concentration rises by one percent as a result of water loss, the thirst center is stimulated and the feeling of thirst develops; but when minerals such as sodium and potassium are lost along with the water, the thirst center is not stimulated.
