Does keeping a food diary work?

The function of a diary is not to do the arithmetic but to make things noticed. A meal that is written down is a meal that is remembered later.

The real function of a food diary is not to keep accounts but to make things visible. Items eaten standing up, in a hurry or with your attention elsewhere are usually not remembered afterwards; once they are written down, they enter the day's total. The difference comes not from changing what is eaten but from what is eaten becoming known.
