How is a dessert routine built on bayram and celebration days?

The problem is not a single dessert but the total of days that come one after another. A guide to the sugar limit, dessert types, visiting and the return.

The problem with bayram, the religious holiday, and with celebration days is not a single dessert but the total of days that come one after another. A decision made over one plate is repeated nine times in three days, and the total is not visible through the window of a single day. That is why the routine is built not on the portion but on the number of days.

Below we cover where the daily sugar limit comes from, where dessert types separate, how much space one portion takes on the scale, what can be done as a guest and as a host, and the return after the holiday.

Where the limit comes from

TÜBER, Türkiye's national dietary guideline, asks that the daily total of sugars added in production together with table sugar, natural sugar aside, not go over 10 percent of energy needs, and preferably stay under 5 percent.

It also gives the figure in numbers: for a person whose energy need averages 2000 kilocalories this comes to 200 kilocalories, that is about 50 grams of sugar. This is one day's share, not three days'.

The guideline also writes that foods high in fat and sugar should be kept out of daily eating and consumed rarely and in small amounts. So a celebration day already falls under the definition of "rarely".

Where dessert types separate

The guideline's list of added sugar sources counts desserts one by one: pastry desserts, helva, milk desserts, ice cream, sweetened yogurt, jam, marmalade, chocolate and confectionery are all on the same list.

Milk desserts appear in two places at once here. The guideline counts them among the products made from milk, but states that the milk group is basically made up of plain milk, yogurt, kefir and low-fat cheeses; it leaves ice cream out of this group because it contains sugar.

The practical result is this: a milk dessert does not stand in for that day's milk portion. The two sit in separate accounts.

How much space one portion takes on the scale

The guideline lists optional foods as multiples of a standard amount of 75 kilocalories. Three pieces of baklava, that is 75-120 grams, are 4-7 times this standard; in dry baklava the same three pieces come to 130-150 grams and rise to 8-9 times.

On the same scale 20 grams of table sugar or 30 grams of jam make one multiple. So one plate of dessert takes up several times the space of the sugar put next to the tea.

The guideline adds a warning for this table as well: the amounts given are not recommended amounts but informational values prepared to help with controlled consumption. We covered how to think about the portion in this tip.

What can be done as a guest

What is offered does not come to the table once; it is repeated through the day. What works here is not refusing but setting up a single plate and holding it: the items to be taken are chosen at the start, and the same decision is not made again on the second round.

The rounds of tea and coffee are part of the account too. The sugar added on each round grows the total independently of the dessert on the plate, and this turns out to be the item that is hardest to notice.

If you are the host

The host has more leverage than the guest. How many kinds of dessert come to the table, what size dishes they are served in, and whether the plates sit on the table or in the kitchen are decisions made in advance.

The second lever is the side of the table that is not dessert. When fruit, plain nuts and water sit in a visible place on the table, part of the repeated rounds shifts there on its own.

The rest of the day

When the meals around the dessert are cancelled, the picture does not improve; it gets worse. The longer the gap, the larger the amount taken at the moment of sitting down at the table.

That is why meals staying in place works on a holiday too. Skipping breakfast and sitting straight down at the table of sweets turns the dessert into the meal itself.

The guideline also writes separately that after sweet foods and drinks the mouth should be rinsed with water and the teeth brushed; on days that repeat often this detail becomes visible.

The return after the holiday

After days that come one after another, trying to balance things by cutting back the next day lasts a few days for most people, and then the old routine returns. Balance is built not in a single day but in the total of the week.

All the return needs is building the first normal meal in its usual form. We covered what to do on days when the plan breaks in this guide.

What it does not solve

This routine is not there to turn dessert into a problem item but to make the total of three days visible. A single holiday plate does not change a year's pattern.

The craving itself is a separate subject and comes from somewhere else; we covered it in this guide, and portion management at a single gathering in this guide.
