The same plate ends differently when it is eaten fast and when it is eaten slowly. In a meal eaten fast the plate runs out before the time needed to notice fullness has passed; because you do not yet feel full when the plate is finished, you reach for a second helping. Changing the pace is one of the few moves that can change how a meal ends without touching the portion at all.
