How is lunch planned on a workday?
Lunch is mostly not planned, it just happens. A guide comparing bringing food from home, choosing in the canteen and eating at the desk.
On a workday lunch is mostly not planned; whatever is there at that moment is what you end up with. Yet this is the meal that sets the rest of the day the most: a plate left short at midday comes back at twice the size at the evening table.
Below we take the three options — bringing food from home, choosing from the canteen, ordering in — with their own conditions, and talk about what eating at the desk changes and where the afternoon heaviness comes from.
What bringing food from home makes easier
The biggest advantage of a meal brought from home is not choice but portion. The size of the container is fixed and how full the plate will be has been decided in the morning.
A portion set aside the evening before does this job on its own. We described the difference between eating from the pot and eating from a container set aside in advance in this tip.
Its difficulty is sameness. Taking the same dish three days in a row is dropped by most people by the end of the third day; carrying two dishes in rotation largely solves this problem.
How to choose in the canteen
Where a fixed menu is served the room to choose is narrow but it has not disappeared. In a line made up of soup, a main dish, pilaf and salad, taking the salad and shrinking the pilaf portion are the two most effective decisions.
On the pilaf side there is a concrete measure: one standard portion of rice or bulgur pilaf is defined as one level medium ladle, that is 90-110 grams; for pasta types the same ladle is 75 grams. The serving ladle is usually bigger than this.
If there is a baked or a boiled option instead of a fried one, the version of the same dish that has taken up less oil is preferred. This is a change made without shrinking the plate.
What changes when you order in
With ordered meals the portion decision leaves your hands and usually arrives in sizes for two. Moving what comes out of the package onto a plate rather than eating it straight makes the amount eaten visible.
We collected in detail what to look at when choosing from a menu in the eating out guide.
When the container should be prepared
The most fragile part of a meal brought from home is its being prepared in the morning. Preparation left to the morning is skipped on the first busy day and the habit ends within two weeks.
Filling the container while getting up from the dinner table makes this lasting. The food is already out, the containers are clean, and because the portion set aside comes from the pot rather than from a plate its size stays controlled too.
The second convenience is the container itself. A fixed-size, single-piece, leak-proof container removes the "how much should I put in" decision that is made again every morning.
What missing the meal does
A busy day can end with lunch being missed completely. This is not a loss on its own; the problem is that gap not being filled with anything until the evening.
A bowl of yogurt or a piece of fruit eaten in the ten minutes squeezed between meetings clearly shrinks the effect of the skipped meal. The aim is not to build a full meal but to shorten the gap.
A few keeping items in the drawer are useful for that reason: nuts, whole grain cereal or dried fruit. These do not take the place of a meal but they bridge the gap.
What eating at the desk misses
A meal eaten in front of a screen is noticed less than the same meal eaten after getting up from the desk. The fullness signal still comes, but it is not registered while attention is elsewhere.
Taking a meal away from the work area, even for fifteen minutes, is one of the rare interventions that raise fullness without changing the portion.
Meeting and business lunch days
A business lunch that falls at midday takes the place of the planned meal. What to do in that case is not to double the meal but to move what was brought from home to the evening or to the next day.
If deciding at the table is hard, the order of ordering helps: soup or salad first, then the main dish. The light item that comes first lowers the sharpness of hunger as you move on to the main dish and makes the portion decision easier.
The evening of these days is built differently too. If a big meal was eaten at midday it is natural to shrink the evening table; without forcing a compensation, looking at how hungry you actually are that day is enough.
Where the afternoon heaviness comes from
The feeling of heaviness in the afternoon is usually tied not to a single dish but to the size and the speed of the meal. A big plate eaten fast leaves a clearer tiredness than the same content eaten slowly.
The second common source is fluid. On a day when little water has been drunk since the morning, the weakness felt in the afternoon is confused with hunger; we covered the distinction in this tip.
In short: the cheapest way not to leave lunch to chance is to move the decision to the morning. A container from home, a fixed order in the canteen or a menu you know — all three do the same job.
