How are nuts portioned?

Nuts carry dense energy in a small volume and are the item where the eye estimate goes wrong most. A guide that gives the portion definitions with their source.

Nuts are the item where the eye estimate goes wrong most. They carry dense energy in a small volume, and when taken by the handful the amount grows fast. That is why defined portions are more useful here than in any other group.

Below we cover the portion definitions, where the handful measure goes wrong, the difference between raw and roasted, the salted and sugared kinds, and the storage arrangement.

The portion definitions

In TÜBER, Türkiye's national dietary guideline, a handful of almonds is defined as 24-26 nuts, that is 30 grams. For walnuts in the same group the measure is given by number of pieces: a handful of walnuts is 4-5 large ones, that is 30 grams.

Both definitions land on the same weight but the number of pieces is different. This shows that the piece measure changes with the type of nut; the shared measure is weight.

We covered their breakdowns, together with the portion, in the a handful of almonds and a handful of walnuts pieces.

Why the handful measure goes wrong

A hand measure measures volume, not density. Because nuts carry dense energy in a small volume, the handful measure strays here more than in other groups.

How full the hand is also changes from person to person. The same phrase "one handful" can describe a clearly different weight in two people.

Weighing once and seeing the equivalent on the plate corrects this deviation to a large extent. Afterwards the eye estimate can be used without going back to the scale.

Raw, roasted and salted

Roasting lowers the moisture of the product and concentrates its taste. In the kinds with salt added the amount eaten usually rises as well; salt works as a factor that opens the appetite.

The kinds coated with sugar or honey fall into a separate group. These are judged not as nuts but as a sweet product, and the portion is set accordingly.

Why setting them into a bowl is essential

In nuts eaten straight from the package the amount is invisible. Because how many times the hand goes into the bag is not counted, the stopping point stays unclear as well; the amount only appears when the package is finished.

Setting them into a small bowl solves this problem on its own. When the amount set aside is finished, the eating is finished too; continuing calls for a separate decision.

Setting them into small containers on the prep day works even better. When there is no need to set them aside at that moment, the habit keeps itself going.

Using them together with a meal

Nuts can be used not only on their own but as part of a meal. A small amount added on top of yogurt, into a salad or onto the breakfast plate raises how filling the meal is.

In this use the portion is already limited; an amount added with a spoon is clearly smaller than one taken by the handful.

Mixed with dried fruit

In mixed packages dried fruit and nuts are together. Because dried fruit has lost its water its volume shrinks and more of it fits into the same handful.

That is why hitting the portion in mixed packages is harder than in a package of a single kind. Setting them aside before eating is even more necessary here.

The storage arrangement

Nuts are a group high in fat and their taste changes over time. Storing them in a cool, dark and closed container slows this change.

If they are going to be kept for a long time the freezer can be used too. When a large package is bought, this helps protect both the freshness and the portion routine.

The storage container not being visible is a separate advantage. A jar standing on the counter is finished far faster than a container standing in the cupboard.

Why the fat share is high

The density of nuts comes largely from their fat content. This does not say that the product is bad; it says that the portion should be kept small.

For the same reason nuts also raise how filling a meal is. A handful added in a small amount makes a salad or a yogurt carry clearly further.

The two are thought about together: a small portion, but regular use. Taking them out entirely and eating them without limit both fall outside the measure.

What to watch in children

In small children whole nuts carry a choking risk. In this age group the product is used crushed or ground.

How often they are eaten

Nuts can be a fixed part of the daily routine; the problem is not in the frequency but in the portion staying undefined. Once the measure is set, eating them every day does not produce a problem.

In short: take the measure from weight, weigh once and adjust your eye estimate, eat from a bowl rather than from the package, and set the storage out of sight. The portion control guide describes the portions in the rest of the day.
