How is the macro need set in children and adolescents?

The fat share starts higher and the protein share lower at a young age. The ranges by age group.

In children and adolescents the macro ranges are not the same as an adult's, and the difference shows most on the fat side. In the reference intake ranges table of Türkiye Beslenme Rehberi (TÜBER), Türkiye's national dietary guideline, fat is 35-40 percent of energy in the 2-3 age group, while from 4 years of age this range falls to the adult band, that is to 20-35 percent.

Why does the protein share start wider?

In the same table the protein range for ages 2-3 is 5-20 percent of energy; the lower limit is clearly lower than the adult one. From the fourth year the range settles into the adult band and stays there up to 64. The lower limit being kept low at a young age is read together with a larger part of energy coming from fat in that period; the three ranges complete one another.

On the carbohydrate side there is no change by age: in all groups 45-60 percent of energy. The absolute floor is the same as well; the reference values table gives 130 grams of carbohydrate a day from ages 2-3 onwards. This floor does not change in adults either, which makes carbohydrate the only macro item that does not part ways by age.

How does the fiber target rise with age?

Fiber is the only macro item that rises step by step with age. In the table 10 grams a day is given for ages 2-3, 14 grams for 4-6, 16 grams for 7-10, 19 grams for 11-14 and 21 grams for 15-17; the adult value of 25 grams is reached only after 18.

This stepping shows that portion size grows with age as well. The same food groups are recommended; only the amounts change. While the carbohydrate floor stays fixed from ages 2-3 onwards, the fiber target rising means that the same grams of carbohydrate have to come from increasingly fiber-rich sources.

The protein side per kilogram

The protein table uses a separate measure and works per kilogram. At young ages the coefficient is highest; for a boy of two 0.97 grams per kilogram is given, and in adulthood this value falls to 0.83 grams. The full breakdown by age group is in the protein needs by age article; the gram equivalents and the second column corrected for protein quality are there as well.

The milk group comes forward in this period too: the guideline describes milk and its products as an important source of calcium and protein for growing children and adolescents.

The measured situation on the added sugar side

The guideline reports a measurement for this age group as well: added sugar makes up 10 percent of daily energy intake in childhood and 15 percent in adolescence. This is not a target but the observed share.

The recommended direction becomes concrete in the choice of drinks. Children and adolescents are asked to prefer drinks that contain no added sugar, such as water, unsweetened fat free or low fat milk, and freshly squeezed fruit juice.

Where does it turn into a mistake?

The first mistake is applying the low fat pattern that is right for an adult to a child of two or three; in that age group the fat share is deliberately higher. The second mistake is taking the fiber target at the adult value; between the 10 grams given for ages 2-3 and the adult's 25 grams there is a difference of more than two and a half fold.

The third mistake is reading the measured added sugar share as though it were a recommendation. 10 percent and 15 percent are the current situation the guideline observed; the recommended direction is to lower that share.

Why is it more sensitive at these ages?

The guideline ties the reason to the speed of growth: so that fast growth and development can be provided, children's energy and nutrient requirements have to be met adequately and in a balanced way. In school children, insufficient intake of energy and nutrients affects growth and development and school success negatively.

In the same section it is asked that foods carrying protein be eaten every day, and that options low in nutrient value and high in energy value be limited. So in this age group the matter is not only total energy but which foods that energy comes from.

On the meal order side breakfast opens a heading of its own; the guideline handles school children and adolescents starting the day without breakfast separately. When the first meal of the day is skipped, the macro distribution is squeezed into a single point instead of spreading through the day.
